I’m having a really bad day! Actually, it started as a horrible night, that carried into the day. All moms will be able to relate to this: my son woke me up at 2:30am, and NEVER went back to sleep. I am barely functioning, on three hours of sleep. Caffeine is screaming my name so loudly, that I can barely concentrate. Moms, can yall relate? And let the mom choir say, “Amen!”
Maybe your bad day isn’t for the same reason as mine, but a bad day is a bad day, no matter what the reason is.
But since you have no magic wand to abracadabra the day away, you need to have some realistic ideas of how you’re going to get through this terrible day.
So, I’d like to share my plan with you.
Take It Easy
Chances are, you had a lot planned for the day. I mean, you’re a mom, there’s always tons to do, right? And if you’re like me, a mom and a woman chasing fast after her purpose, the day was even more jammed packed.
But the truth is, if you’re super tired or unfocused, you’re not going to get a lot done anyway. You need to declare today, a rest day. I am literally writing this blog post, and them I am DONE for the day!
The Word “No” Needs to Be Your Go to Word for The Day
If you have any hopes of taking it easy, “no” needs to be your mantra for the day.
Maybe this is new for you. Maybe you’re not used to saying no, to others or yourself. But trust me, this is a skill you’re gonna want to develop and master.
My oldest daughter once told me that my no game is real strong. And she’s right! I have no problem hitting you with a no, nope, naw, nuh-uh, or even a no way.
But I wasn’t always like this. It used to be hard for me to say no to people. Because I was desperate for acceptance and inclusion. I was a people pleaser. But not anymore, nope, not at all.
Before people even get their full sentences out of their mouths, be ready to protect your rest day. “Hey honey, what’s for” No. “Hey girl, you wanna go” No. “Mom, do you love m…” No. Okay, don’t be too quick, that last one should have been a yes!
But you get my point.
Enjoy Lots of Self Care
Self-care might look different for each one of us; but let me give you a few ideas to get you started:
- Kick back and binge watch your favorite show or find a good Netflix movie.
- Order out. When I’m super tired, the last thing I want to do is cook.
- Take a nap if your circumstances allow. Because of course if you have little ones running around, this may not be possible.
- Take a bubble bath. Again, if your circumstances allow.
- Read a good book; if you can keep your eyes open.
These are just a few ideas to get you going. Of course, if you’re up to leaving the house (which I’m not), you can add on getting a pedicure or manicure too.
Honestly, it’s hard to remain grateful, and resist complaining when you’re having a lousy day. But that’s when it’s most important to remind yourself that even when things don’t work out the way you hoped or planned, life is still good, and you still have so much to appreciate.
Take my situation for example, my son didn’t really allow me to get any sleep last night.
I could sit here and complain and gripe about the situation, or I can remind myself how thankful I am for that little stinker (wink wink); and how grateful I am for at least one thing I was able to accomplish today, this blog post!
I’m confident that you still have so much to be thankful for too, in spite of this bad day.
Call It an Early Night
There are few things quite as healthy and refreshing, as a good night sleep.
So how about you put this bad day to bed early, so you can be prepared to rise early for a new promising day, with energy and zeal.
In fact, just make it an early night for the kids too.
Now it goes without saying, that these bad days can’t become a habit. We got things to do and goals to achieve. So, whatever caused this bad day will need to be addressed so it doesn’t become a reoccurring problem. But not now. For now, take it easy, up your “no” game, enjoy some self-care, think about all that you’re grateful for, and then head to bed. Tomorrow’s waiting for you; and I have a feeling it’s going to be a much better day.
