New You

Close Your Eyes, and Dream

If I stepped into your dream on a typical weekday, at a time when most people are hard at work at their jobs, what would I find you doing? Remember it’s a dream, I’m not asking what you literally do each day, I’m asking what it is you would like to be doing each day. Would I find you running a small coffee shop nestled in the center of your town? Or working at a studio on a very flamboyant art piece, that you just know the local art museum will be thrilled to showcase. Maybe I’ll find you still at home, sitting on the couch in your warm snuggly pajamas, drinking a hot cup of tea, and pounding away on the keyboard, anxious to finish up chapter four of your upcoming book. Wherever you are, keep your eyes closed, and fall into the dream; because chances are, you’ll find your purpose there.

Life is pretty mundane. As moms, we help, prepare, cook, clean, drive, listen, solve, read, bathe, run errands, attend events, and so and so on, repeatedly throughout the days, weeks, months, and years. If we’re not careful, it’s easy to completely lose ourselves in our responsibilities as moms, and totally lose sight of those dreams that live deep down in our hearts. Now don’t misunderstand me, being a mom is a dream in itself. There’s nothing as rich and beautiful as being a part of bringing life into this world, and then nourishing and helping that life to become all it’s supposed to be. What I want you to see and understand, is that your life still matters too. Your goals, dreams, passions, and purpose are still relevant and are still needed. Allow yourself to dream again.

Maybe you hesitate to allow yourself to dream again, because it feels impossible to ever achieve all that is in your heart. You start thinking about the time that you don’t have; the money that you would need; the college degree you never got. But can I gently remind you, that nothing great and amazing is ever accomplished, without first having a beginning. There’s always a first step to conquer, and then a second step to conquer, and then a third step to conquer, and on and on from there. You don’t need to have it all figured out right now, you just need to take the first step. And here’s the really great news, allowing yourself to dream again, igniting hope and possibility deep within you, getting those creative juices flowing in your mind and heart again, is the first step.  Open your eyes; welcome to your new beginning!

  1. Wow. Well said…very well said. You put into words exactly what has been on my heart lately. And yes you’re right: being “Mom” is perhaps my best dream of all. But there has to be more to my life as well, especially as children grow older.

I used to have dreams, but feel that I have lost them – put them on the back burner. Now, I’m not so sure they were the right ones. I am seeking God to know what is HIS dream for me…

    Fantastic post. Thank you 🤗

  2. I want to be a Lactation Consultant to help women get through breastfeeding struggles. I struggled so bad in the first month, and I’d love to see other women get through it! Great post!

    1. That is such a great goal! When I had my first child, I tried breastfeeding. I struggled too and didn’t get much help from anyone. My son ended up in the hospital with Jaundice because he wasn’t really getting fed. It was such a scary experience that I immediately stopped breastfeeding and started bottle feeding. I also bottle fed the next 3 children I had. I was just too scared after that experience. But I always feel like I missed out on a really great experience. I wish I had someone like you to help me all those years ago. Do what it takes to reach that goal! I’m rooting for you!

  3. This post hits so close to home. I’m a stay at home with two little boys and some days I feel so lost in it. I’ve been thinking a lot lately of what I want to do when they go to school and I’m ready to work again. I’m thinking of finishing my degree online and going back into childcare.

    1. I know that feeling all to well Brittany! It’s such an amazing opportunity/experience to be able to stay home with our little ones. But sometimes those feelings of being stuck, or isolated/lonely, or feeling like you could/should be doing more with your life, can be so overwhelming. Not too mention that being a stay at home mom is hard work! There’s nothing easy about it contrary to popular belief. But the rewards are also quite amazing. I have such an incredibly close relationship with all 4 of my kids and I know it’s a direct result of the quality time I spent with them, I got to see every first experience they had. And I got to always be the one there for them, when they were hurt, sad, or even happy and excited about anything. I’m thankful for that. And I know you’re going to end up with the same rewards. I encourage you to stay connected with things you love to do (I wrote an article on this: https://nolongerastayathomemom.wordpress.com/2019/10/26/what-are-5-things-you-love-to-do-outside-of-being-a-mom/). Mothering can be time consuming. I didn’t make much time for me; I do regret that. Make time for you, and the things you love, outside of your children. I encourage you to finish that degree! And when you do, I want to hear all about it!

  4. Love this. My dream is to publish a self help book “guide to life” about how to deal with everything, through my eyes, offering my experiences and the lessons ive learned. Sometimes the dream seems so far away it feels impossible. I visualize myself at a book signing and that helps ignite the hope again. The errands never end when ur a mom. Ur right about that 💯 and ur right about everything else. Self doubt is mostly what holds me back though, but im working on it, one step at a time

    1. That’s a great dream! It sounds like a book that could help a lot of people! I can’t wait to read it someday. Self doubt is a beast of an enemy, but all beasts can be tamed….you got this! Keep going…I’m rooting for you!
